Our Clearinghouse Connections series offers you a more intimate look at the National Student Clearinghouse by introducing you to our people and the work they do. Today, meet John Schiappa, who is a Product Manager for StudentTracker® for High Schools services at the Clearinghouse.

Q: How long have you been at the Clearinghouse, and what is your role?
I’ve been with the Clearinghouse for one year working as a product manager. In my position, I serve as a strategic advisor and lead a team in developing and implementing improvements to StudentTracker for High Schools. I describe myself as an “idea person” who excels at setting the course toward a future vision. My team and I use customer feedback as a starting point to bring solutions to the schools who use the product.

Q: What is your background in education?
A:  As a Washington Metro native, I attended Langley High School in McLean, VA, and graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Before joining the Clearinghouse, I worked for the nation’s largest virtual education provider, where my work included everything from managing school operations to reporting on performance metrics. I’ve also taught special education at a Virginia middle school.

Q: What do you strive to achieve with StudentTracker?
A: Although the work I do is far removed from the experience of an individual high school student sitting in a classroom, my goal is always to do whatever I can to help that student get from that classroom seat to a college or career. Success, in my view, is making sure that a school has visibility into metrics that can affect long-term outcomes for students. If the work I do helps a school use data to serve their students better, then it’s worthwhile.

Q: What’s your favorite aspect of your job?
A:  My favorite days are when my team is working together to generate new ideas. I love being able to take a step back from the day-to-day work and brainstorm with the team to figure out how to make StudentTracker for High Schools better in the future. Going into a room with a group of really smart people and a whiteboard – those are great moments. The pursuit of an idea leads you to places you never could have gone by yourself.

Q: Outside of the Clearinghouse, what do you like to do for fun?
I stay busy by enjoying the hobbies I’ve loved since I was a kid in the 1980s. I’m an avid gamer who has played Dungeons & Dragons for three decades and enjoy various video games as well. I was also a competitive cyclist in college, and I once rode a bike from Raleigh, NC, to Washington, DC, in just three days.

“If the work I do helps a school use data to serve their students better, then it’s worthwhile.”
